DENTOKAN JUJUTSU (AIKIJUJUTSU):

At the Rishinkan Dojo, we offer instruction in the art of Dentokan Jujutsu, a branch of the
Hakko Ryu and Kokodo Ryu schools.  Because of our connection to the Daito Ryu
school, our style is known as a form of
Aikijujutsu. The style was founded by Col. Roy
Jerry Hobbs in 1997.  Hobbs sensei began his study of Hakko Ryu in 1965, received the
Shihan Menkyo in 1983, and Menkyo Kaiden in the Kokodo branch in 1997.

The following is a summary of the style taken from Hobbs sensei's article on the history of Dentokan
Jujutsu:

"
Dentokan Jujutsu provides one with a full spectrum of techniques. These include Kansetsu Waza (joint
locking techniques), Nage Waza (throwing techniques), Shime Waza (strangulation techniques), and
Atemi Waza (striking techniques). These techniques coupled with an understanding of Henka, Gensoku,
and Oyo make possible a graduated response to any attack. One’s response can be one of simply
pinning or restraining an opponent to an all out counter attack. It is a self-protection art developed for
the battlefields of old Japan, yet still applicable to today’s legalistic society.
"

Dentokan Jujutsu closely follows the original curriculum's of Hakko Ryu and Kokodo Ryu, including Shodan-
Gi, Nidan-Gi, Sandan-Gi, and Yondan-Gi. After many years of dedicated study, advanced students may be
initiated into the secret teachings of Shihan-Gi, Kaiden-Gi and Sandaikichu-Gi, leading to full transmission of
the art.

Dentokan Jujutsu Training in Sword & Staff:
As part of Dentokan Jujutsu, students also learn the sword (ken) and staff (jo) through the study of two long-
form solo kata encompassing Iaijutsu and Jojutsu techniques.  The sword kata is called
Seisui no Ken
("Sword of Pure Flowing Water") and is 27-movements.  The staff kata is named
Harusame no Jo ("Staff of
the Spring Rain") and consists of 37-movements for the 4-foot staff.
Students may also elect to study the full
Dentokan Iaijutsu curriculum as a supplementary study to Jujutsu.
