AIKIJUJUTSU & JUJUTSU:
At the Rishinkan Dojo, we offer instruction in the art of Dentokan Aikijujutsu (also
called simply Jujutsu), a branch of the Hakko Ryu and Kokodo Ryu schools. The
style was founded by Col. Roy Jerry Hobbs in 1997 after having first received his
Shihan license in Hakko Ryu in 1984, then finally Menkyo Kaiden (full transmission)
in the Kokodo Ryu branch of Hakko Ryu in 1997 from Irie Yasuhiro sensei. He
founded the Dentokan school prior to leaving Japan with the blessing of Irie sensei.
Dentokan Aikijujutsu closely follows the original curriculum's of Hakko Ryu and
Kokodo Ryu, including Shodan-Gi, Nidan-Gi, Sandan-Gi, and Yondan-Gi. After
many years of dedicated study, advanced students may be initiated into the secret
teachings of Shihan-Gi, Kaiden-Gi and Sandaikichu-Gi, leading to full transmission
of the art. Click here for the full curriculum of Dentokan Jujutsu/Aikijujutsu.
The following is a summary of the style taken from Hobbs sensei's article on the
history of Dentokan Jujutsu:
"Dentokan Ju-Jutsu provides one with a full spectrum of techniques. These include
Kansetsu Waza (joint locking techniques), Nage Waza (throwing techniques), Shime
Waza (strangulation techniques), and Atemi Waza (striking techniques). These
techniques coupled with an understanding of Henka, Gensoku, and Oyo make
possible a graduated response to any attack. One’s response can be one of simply
pinning or restraining an opponent to an all out counter attack. It is a self-protection
art developed for the battlefields of old Japan, yet still applicable to today’s legalistic
society."
