IAIJUTSU & KENJUTSU:
Our Dojo offers instruction in Dentokan Iaijutsu, a modern style of traditional
Japanese swordsmanship that centers on the teachings of the Dento Shoshin Ryu
school. Iaijutsu is an excellent compliment to Aikijujutsu, or may be studied as a
stand-alone art. As students of the Rishinkan Dojo advance in rank, they also have
the opportunity to practice other classical (Koryu) and modern Iaijutsu forms, as
well as Kenjutsu, Jojutsu and Tameshigiri as part of their overall Iaijutsu studies.
Our core curriculum includes the following:
Iaijutsu (Sword Drawing Arts):
Iaijutsu (also known as Iaido, Battojutsu, etc.) is a traditional Japanese martial art
that utilizes the sword through both offensive and defensive tactics. The essence of
the art is to draw the sword quickly and accurately to defeat an opponent (or
opponents) in one fluid motion. All beginning students start with Iaijutsu to learn
basic principles (Kihon) before being introduced to Kenjutsu.
Kenjutsu (Paired Tactical Swordsmanship):
Kenjutsu (also known as Heiho, Tachiuchi, etc.) is similar to Iaijutsu, but deals
primarily with combat after the sword is drawn. It was a battlefield art and refined
through centuries of study and use in ancient Japan. It is generally practiced
through prearranged forms (Kumitachi) with wooden swords.
Tameshigiri (Test Cutting):
Tameshigiri is the practice of test cutting with a real sword. Tameshigiri is an
essential aspect of training in Japanese swordsmanship and tests the swordsman's
cutting angle (hasuji), grip (tenouchi), power, and focus, among other aspects.
